Video: David Cook Performs “The Last Goodbye” on Ellen

David Cook took to the stage at The Ellen DeGeneres Show today to perform his new single, “The Last Goodbye” from his highly anticipated sophomore album, This Loud Morning.

Check out David’s performance below!

I think he sounded a little bit better than his performance last week on American Idol. It will be nice to hear what this song sounds like when the band starts putting their own unique touches on it.

What did y’all think about David’s performance?

New Music Tuesday: NKOTBSB – “Don’t Turn Out The Lights”

This morning NKOTB’s Joe McIntyre and BSB’s AJ McLean debuted the first joint NKOTBSB single, “Don’t Turn Out The Lights” on Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show.

Listen to their interview with Ryan Secrest below!

And without further ado, take a listen to the first joint single from NKOTBSB, “Don’t Turn Out The Lights”!

I love it! (You’re absolutely shocked, I know!) But really, this could have been either really good or really bad. I raised an eyebrow at the groups recording music together, but this is really, really good. Seriously, this is one of the catchiest songs that the Backstreet Boys have released as a single in a loooooooooooooong time.

As a longtime fan of both groups, I can attest that it’s an absolute trip to hear a song with vocals from both Joe McIntyre and Brian Littrell on it. (I’m kinda dying on the inside right now! Haha!)

If you love this song,  then don’t forget to download your copy of “Don’t Turn Out The Lights” when it hits the iTunes store tomorrow!

What does everyone think of the NKOTBSB collaboration? Hang tough in the comments below!

Ear Candy: New Politics — “Dignity”

If I had to choose one band right now that I think everyone and their momma should listen to, it would be New Politics. I think they’re one of the best bands on the music scene right now. The music is great alternative rock, with good hooks, and solid lyrics.

The trio (David Boyd, Soeren Hansen, and Louis Vecchio) have released their second single, “Dignity,” off their self-titled debut album. MTV has also named the band one of their “2011 Artists To Watch.”

The band recently made their network television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they performed “Dignity” live.

Check out their performance below.

If you ever get a chance to see New Politics live, they are not to be missed. I caught them opening for The Spill Canvas in San Francisco last April and also at Music in the Park in Downtown San Jose in July. Both were absolute stellar shows. David Boyd is an amazing showman. You will leave wanting more.

Make sure to check out their tour dates at newpoliticsrock.com!

Ear Candy: Britney Spears — “Hold It Against Me”

Britney Spears is hitting the music scene again with her first single, “Hold It Against Me” off her seventh studio album slated to be released later this year.

With all the hype for Ms. Spears’ new album coming out this spring, I was expecting her first single to be the best we’ve ever heard from her. Frankly, it’s just not.

“Hold It Against Me,” which is the work of producers, Dr. Luke and Max Martin, is a definite club thumper. The beat immediately makes you want to get up and dance, but maybe not sing-a-long to.

The lyrics definitely leave much to be desired. They seem so amateur and ridiculous in comparison to lyrics from past lead singles. Britney songs aren’t literary masterpieces by any means, but usually they have some kind of substance to them. Also, during my initial listen of the song, I feel like the lyrics are too slow for the song during the verses.

The one part of the song that I did enjoy is the breakdown. The beats are fantastic. I hope that there will be some excellent choreography to be paired with it for the music video.

I really expected a lot more from Britney’s first single. This doesn’t scream to me that she’s back; It actually feels like she picked out a leftover song from 2007’s Blackout. As a longtime fan of Britney’s, “Hold It Against Me” is an absolute letdown.

Ear Candy >> Avril Lavigne — “What The Hell”

It seems that Avril Lavigne is continuing to embrace the pop side of her musical self that we were introduced to on her 2007 album The Best Damn Thing. The infusion of pop in her music is continuing to work out in her favor. Her latest single “What The Hell” (co-written and produced by Max Martin) was released earlier this week and climbed to number three on iTunes within a matter of hours.

Lavigne continues to do what she does best, which is make songs that people, especially women, can relate to. “What The Hell” is about tossing caution to the wind in life and relationships, and doing things that we normally wouldn’t do. What person doesn’t at least daydream about doing this?

The melody sounds pretty simple upon first listen, but when you listen closely there are a lot of layers to the track which in turn give it that kick of fun, bop-around-to-it-pop sound.

Overall, the song is produced well, the beat is catchy, and the lyrics are relatable and easy to sing-a-long to. Those are definitely the necessary ingredients of a hit song in the making.

“What The Hell” is available of iTunes now. Avril Lavigne’s fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby is due out March 8.

New Music Video from Backstreet Boy Nick Carter

Nick Carter is releasing his second solo album, I’m Taking Off in early 2011. (Yes, second solo album.)

The music video for Nick’s first single off the album, “Just One Kiss” hit the interwebz earlier this week. Check out the video, and we’ll discuss it afterwords.

Sooooooo, what did y’all think?

I think that I need to start a career in writing music video treatments, because this video is visually stunning, but there’s no storyline. It’s just Nick on the beach singing to the camera. Not gonna lie, it’s pretty boring.

The song is about that kiss at the end of the night, which means the video obviously could have told a story of a first date. Nick is still young enough where a video that takes place during a night out could be seen as cute and charming.

As for the song, it’s okay. I don’t know how well it will do on the radio, but maybe it will work some magic on iTunes.

I definitely plan on checking out Nick’s second album, since I rather enjoyed his first one.

Are y’all excited about Nick’s new album, or would you prefer him to just stick with BSB?

Maroon 5 Debut “Hands All Over” Music Video on Facebook

Earlier this week Maroon 5 debuted a music video for the title track of their latest album, “Hands All Over.”

Check it out below!

I really like this video. It has a rock edge to it, which fits the song. I also really like the effects that were used.

I am completely confused about whether “Hands All Over” is the band’s next single or not. I would have put my money on “Stutter” being the third single from Hands All Over, possibly followed up “Never Gonna Leave This Bed.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love “Hands All Over.” It’s one of my favorite tracks on Maroon 5’s latest album. I was completely over the moon when they performed it at their show in San Francisco last month. It’s just that I hve never pictured it being a single.

I’m just confused as to what is going on. Music videos are expensive to make, especially ones with fancy effects, so I wouldn’t think they would make a video without the song being their next single.

What do y’all think of Maroon 5’s new video?

What song do you hope is Maroon 5’s next single? Take the poll below!

Tour Talk With Kris Allen

As his tour with Lifehouse comes to a close this week, Kris Allen took some time to talk with me about being on tour the past year supporting different artists, the “Alright With Me” video he did for his fans, and what he thinks is the biggest misconception about his music.

I caught your show the other night in San Francisco, it was great.

Thanks, that was a really fun show.

My friend mentioned after the show that her favorite part about your set was that you’re converting Lifehouse fans in about eight songs or less.

Tell her thanks. That’s kind of what we’re trying to do.

Can you tell while you’re performing that you are drawing people into your music?

I feel like we can tell. It takes about three or four songs. You know they’re like, “Oh, this is fun,” and by the end they’re like “Wow, that was a lot of fun!” And it’s always cool when you can win over the dudes. Girls are probably the best fans that you can have, but when you can win over the guys at a show, especially the older guys, it’s awesome.

Very cool. You’ve supported different bands this year on tour. Is it a feeling of “same thing, different band” or is the vibe different on each tour?

I think it’s a different vibe, you know? We were out with totally different kinds of artists. We went out with Maroon 5, and Keith Urban, and now Lifehouse. Also, I think the vibe really depends on the venue. With Keith, we were playing those monster fairs with like 10,000 people there. With Maroon 5, it was like smaller outdoors stuff, but still pretty big. And with Lifehouse we’re doing theatres. It’s been a blast, it really has been for every one of them.

Is it more intimidating to play a small intimate show or a large venue?

The most intimidating crowd to play for is about five people. When it’s super small and you’re just sitting in a room with friends and they’ll go “Hey Kris, sing us a song,” you’re like, “Oh no, I can’t do that.” It’s really weird.

In the beginning of the tour you had “Man In The Mirror” on the set list, and then switched it out for Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” what was behind that decision?

I think that it was a conscious decision to say you know what, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” is a little more upbeat of a song. And we’ve been playing “Man In The Mirror” forever. It was just nice to play something new, and I think when we introduce new stuff into the set everyone gets excited about it. It may not be perfect at first, and it may not even be that great, but we get excited about playing new stuff. Continue reading Tour Talk With Kris Allen
