Tim Halperin Talks About His Debut Album, ‘Rise and Fall’

If you haven’t been keeping tabs on singer-songwriter Tim Halperin since he appeared on season 10 of American Idol this year, allow me bring you up to speed.

Halperin released his first single, “The Last Song,” in less than a week after not advancing to the Top 13 on Idol. He was recognized by a nationally syndicated radio host, “DJ Kidd Kraddick,” and took part in a Kidd Kraddick in the Morning segment called “Idol Got It Wrong,” where fans could vote on whether his version of an Idol performance was better than the contestant’s version each week. Add in raising $8,000 to make a video for “The Last Song,” a mini-tour and his ongoing work for Komen For the Cure, you could say that Halperin’s managed to keep himself pretty busy so far during his post-Idol career.

On September 26, Halperin spent the final 24 hours of his American Idol contract in “Idol jail” outside a shopping center in Texas, while entertaining 50,000 viewers on USTREAM with live performances of songs from his debut full-length album, Rise and Fall. On September 27, the day after his contract with Idol was up, Rise and Fall was digitally released to iTunes at midnight.

Later that week, Halperin graciously took the time to talk with me about where the idea to go to “Idol jail” came from, his fantastic new album, and what’s coming up next for him.

How was your caged existence on Monday?

[laughs] You know, I see why it’s not fun to be in jail. I did have some fun, though, because my jail wasn’t your typical jail. I had people bringing me Starbucks and coming and hanging out with me and dancing around. I had a piano in jail and for me, that’s not jail at all. It was good. It was long, though. It was very exhausting. I only slept probably 30 minutes during the 26 hours that I was in prison. I really enjoyed it, though.

I had tuned in for an hour or so during the afternoon, and then I tuned back in after your album was released, which was like 9:30-10:00 my time (PST), and you looked so tired by then.

Yeah, the interesting aspect of it is that it was live the whole time. And whenever I have people watching me, I love entertaining people and interacting with people. I felt like I had to entertain and interact with everyone the whole time. Because I’d look and there’d be like 276 people watching, 500 people watching, 400 people watching right now. I’m like, “Oh my gosh!” You know, I thought, This would be like a really good show, like a really good gig to have 500 people sitting there watching me. I can’t waste this time, I can’t waste this opportunity to share my music with people and hang out with people, and talk with people.

Video: Tim Halperin – “Awkward at the Clubs”

Yesterday while I was getting ready to head down to the HP for various shenanigans that go along with the season 10 Idols being in town, an extremely funny video from Tim Halperin called, “Awkward at the Clubs” popped up on my Twitter feed. Check it out below!

Overall, I think “Awkward at the Clubs” is hilarious. I really like how Tim incorporated a bunch of Top 40 songs and managed to include a line about playing Angry Birds! Pop culture references, FTW!

You can get a free download of “Awkward at the Clubs” >>here<<

Tim Halperin Discusses The Making of “The Last Song” Music Video

There have been a few extremely talented former American Idol contestants that have faded away from the spotlight after appearing on the show. For former contestants to stay on the fans’ radar, they have to really make a concerted effort, which is exactly what season 10 Top 24 contestant, Tim Halperin has been doing.

A lot of things have happened since I last spoke with Halperin earlier this year. He released “The Last Song” as a free mp3 download right after his run on Idol ended, which led to a unique opportunity with radio DJ, Kidd Kraddick. In between going on his Piano Tour and participating in Kidd Kraddick’s “Idol Got It Wrong” competition, Halperin raised $8,000 via Kickstarter to fund the intriguing and visually stunning music video for “The Last Song,” which premiered on June 6.

Watch Halperin’s music video for “The Last Song” below, and then check out my extensive Q&A session with the singer-songwriter which took place earlier this week about the making of “The Last Song” music video, his participation in “Idol Got It Wrong,” and what he thought about this season’s American Idol results.

How long ago did you actually write “The Last Song,” and how did it come to be the song to kick off your post-Idol journey with?

I wrote “The Last Song” about a year and a half ago. I was about three months out of a long term relationship, and I kind of came to that point where I was resolved to move. It’d come to that point where a lot of time you’ll see things or remember certain memories about that other person. Every day you’ll see certain things. So, it kind of got through that for a couple months, and I was finally ready to move on. I had that line going through my head, “This is the last song I’ll write for you,” because after being with someone for quite awhile you tend to write a lot of music about them. I had that line in my head and just started filling out different lyrics and different ideas for it.

That was one of the first songs that we recorded on my full length CD that will come out in the fall. It just turned out really well, and I think that that song gives people a good picture of who I am, and also that my music is very honest and straightforward. I like to throw all my emotions on the table, because I think people can relate best to honest music. That was kind of why I put it out first after American Idol. If you’re an Idol fan that maybe hasn’t heard my music before, you’ll get a good glimpse of who I am as a songwriter.

Did you always intend to turn “The Last Song” into a music video?

No, I hadn’t really thought about doing a music video. When I gave “The Last Song” out for free, in that first week it had almost 5,000 downloads. People really seemed to latch onto it, and it started getting radio play with this radio DJ in Dallas, Kidd Kraddick. It actually got enough radio play to put it on the Top 200 radio show, and it actually hit 148 a few weeks ago, which is really cool.

So I was like, “Man, people really relate to this song,” and so I called my buddy who did my music video for “She Runs” about a year ago. These two directors, my two friends Jonathan Combs and Joe Childress, I called them up and said, “I want to do a music video, I don’t have any money.” [laughs] Which they’re familiar with that, cause I didn’t have any money for the “She Runs” video. So, they started brainstorming and said that they wanted to do another video for me. They had a great concept, but they’re like, “This is going to take some money to do it.”

We decided to do a Kickstarter page where people could donate in return for different rewards like Twitter mentions and YouTube shout outs. And we raised the whole budget. I was so excited. We raised the $8,000 in less than 30 days.

Tim Halperin wrapped up “Idol Got It Wrong” this week by taking on the Carrie Underwood song, “Flat On The Floor,” which Lauren Alaina sang last night during the American Idol finale.

Check out Tim’s performance below!

Another solid performance from Tim! I thought he added some soul to a very country song. Also, the big notes he hit midway through and at the end of the performance were a couple of my favorite moments.

Video: Tim Halperin Covers “Rhiannon”

Earlier this morning, Tim Halperin took on his latest “Idol Got It Wrong” challenge, and sang Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon, which was sung last night on American Idol by Top 3 contestant, Haley Reinhart.

Take a listen below!

Tim had nine songs to choose from this week, and he went with one of the two songs (Lonestar’s “Amazed” was my other pick) that I would have chosen for him to sing. Per usual, he sounds fantastic.

I wish I had the money to open my own record label, because I would sign Tim in a hot second. (And I would totally move up his record release from September to right now.)

Video: Tim Halperin Covers “Love Potion No. 9”

Tim Halperin took on his latest “Idol Got It Wrong” challenge and took on “Love Potion No. 9,” which was the song James Durbin closed the show with on American Idol last night.

Watch Tim perform his rendition of “Love Potion No. 9” below.

Not gonna front here, I was a tad skeptical when I found out this was the song Tim went with, but as soon as he started singing it became totally clear that this was a great decision. Tim really got to let that unique tone to his voice shine. I thought this was another great performance.

Video: Tim Halperin Covers Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”

Tim Halperin returned to Kidd Kraddick’s radio show this morning to perform his rendition of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” as apart of “Idol Got It Wrong.”

Each week for “Idol Got It Wrong,” Tim is choosing a song to perform that one of the Idol contestants performed during that week’s show for your votes. If Tim gets more votes than the contestant that performed during the show, he performs again the following week. If the Idol contestant gets more votes, then he’s out. So basically vote for Tim, so we get these radtastic covers each week!  Sounds good, right?

This week Tim is taking on Haley Reinhart who performed Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” last night on Idol.

Check out Tim’s rendition of “Rolling In The Deep” below!

I think this is my favorite cover that Tim has done for “Idol Got It Wrong,” so far!  In particular, I really liked when he hit the larger notes in the chorus and went up into his falsetto range towards the end  of the song. Good stuff!

Obviously I’m a fan, but what did y’all think of Tim’s performance of “Rolling In The Deep”?
