Music Review >> Matt Nathanson – ‘Modern Love’

Dear summer, your soundtrack has arrived. This week marks the welcomed return of Matt Nathanson with his latest effort, Modern Love.

The San Francisco-based Nathanson took a year-long break from touring to work on his seventh album with his longtime collaborator, Mark Weinberg. Drawing influence from such bands as Depeche Mode, AC/DC and Talking Heads, Modern Love is a striking move forward from the singer-songwriter.

“We started with the idea of keeping a groove steady the whole way through a song,” Nathanson stated in a press release about the album. “I wanted things to breathe and hang off these songs in a way that defied the fact that they were written on an acoustic guitar.”

The lead single, “Faster,” really took me by surprise at first, because it is such a departure from “C’mon Get Higher” and the other material from Nathanson’s previous album, Some Mad Hope. The song really grabbed my attention, and it left me feeling excited about the direction in which he is taking his music.

Songs like “Mercy” and the album’s title track are guaranteed live show sing-a-longs. Both burst with such an energy which makes them perfect additions to any listener’s summer playlists.

Other standouts include “Run,” which features Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, and “Room At the End of the World.” In particular, “Run” shows the singer-songwriter’s sexier, romantic side. Its opening lyrics, “I wanna watch you undress, I wanna watch you glow, let hair down, all around, and cover us both,” are just the tip of the intimate iceberg. While I feel like it could have been recorded by just Nathanson alone, the combination of his vocals with Nettles’ elevates the song’s overall chemistry and emotional connection.

I really like “Room At the End of the World” because it has a bit of an anthemic feel to it, and I can’t wait to see how it translates onstage during a live show. If you have ever had the opportunity to see Nathanson perform live, then you know that he has a very charismatic stage presence which leads to quite the enamored audience.

With a bigger sound combined with provocative lyrics, Modern Love will be the album this summer that moves people to sing-a-long, to dance, and to be good to one another.

Modern Love is available now. For more information on Matt Nathanson, check out his official website.

Almost Honest & Distant Dice Perform at Left Coast Live 365

This past Thursday, Left Coast Live 365 kicked off at the Theatre on San Pedro Square in Downtown San Jose with bands Almost Honest and Distant Dice.

Distant Dice kicked off the night, and they were just fantastic. I had checked out some of their music prior to the show that night and was only further intrigued to catch their performance at LCL 365.

Check out their performance of “Firewater” below!

Almost Honest closed the show that night, and I was super stoked to finally get the chance to hear what their vibe was like with a full band. It was great to hear songs off the band’s upcoming EP, and it sounds like people will be in for some awesome music when it’s released!

Video: Gwyneth Paltrow Performs “Forget You” at Glee! Live!

Holy cow, this is awesome! Gwyneth Paltrow joined the Glee cast last night to perform “Forget You” during their tour stop in East Rutherford, NJ. Check out the video from the show below!

I thought Gwyneth sounded great! I love that she made a guest appearance, since “Forget You” was such a huge hit during season two.

How do y’all think Gwyneth did? And what other Glee guest star or even regular cast member (Matthew Morrison, I’m talking to you!) would you like to see pop up on the Glee! Live! tour before it wraps up in the states?

Music Video: Lady Gaga – “The Edge of Glory”

The latest music video from Lady Gaga was released yesterday! Check out the video for “The Edge of Glory” below!

There’s something very old school Madonna/Cher-esque about this video, and I like it! I am a fan of simple, well done videos. For me, this is great.

You know, I’m not a huge fan of her new album, this is one of maybe two-three songs that I actually like, and I’m happy she made it a single.

What do y’all think of Lady Gaga’s new video?

The Voice: Team Adam Takeover

Honestly, I’ve been sitting here trying to come up with a title for this blog post, and yeah, I think this one is fitting, because Team Adam basically stole the show on The Voice last night.

Before I talk about last night’s performances, let’s talk about the Top 8 results. America saved Beverly McClellan (Team Xtina)and Dia Frampton (Team Blake). Christina Aguilera saved Frenchie Davis, and Blake Shelton chose to save Xenia.

Maybe it’s just me, but I do not understand how people are “shocked” over Blake choosing Xenia over Jared Blake and Patrick Thomas.

Jared Blake’s voice is just average, at best. There are a handful of lead singers that sound just like him on the radio. Nothing about his voice stood out to me, personally. With Patrick Thomas, I don’t think he should have gone past the battle round. Tyler Robinson completely outsang him. Plus, his performance last week was just okay.

From the begining, it’s been fairly obvious that Blake has a soft soft for Xenia’s voice. Their rehearsal footage is always charming and endearing. I figured he would pick her if America didn’t save her. I think as soon as Xenia gets over her stage fright, she will just soar.

Moving on to last night’s show. It was Team Adam (Casey Weston, Devon Barley, Jeff Jenkins, and Javier Colon) and Team Cee Lo’s (Thompson Sisters, Nakia, Curtis Grimes, and Vicci Martinez) turn to get their singin’ on.
