Music Review >> Matchbox Twenty – ‘North’

This week, Matchbox Twenty (Rob Thomas, Paul Doucette, Kyle Cook, and Brian Yale) offer up an eclectic mix of new music for fans old and new with their fourth full-length studio record, North.

The multi-platinum selling pop rock band hit the forefront of the music scene in the late ’90s with their debut record, Yourself or Someone Like You, which spawned hit singles like, “3 A.M.,” “Push,” “Real World,” and “Back 2 Good.”

North is the follow-up record to the band’s 2007 release, Exile on Mainstream, which was a compilation of the band’s biggest hits including, “If You’re Gone,” “Bent,” How Far We’ve Come,” and “Bright Lights,” as well as six new songs.

Produced by the Grammy Award-winning producer Matt Serletic, North showcases Matchbox Twenty at the top of their game. The band continues to bring solid songwriting, well-crafted arrangements, and Thomas’ unmistakable signature vocals to the table.

Rhythmic tracks like their catchy lead single, “She’s So Mean,” and the electropop-flavored “Put Your Hands Up” add a refreshing kick to the band’s ever-evolving sound. Additionally, the dedicated “Our Song” will keep you moving and singing-a-long to the chorus in no time.

The band’s upcoming single, “Overjoyed,” will more than likely prove to be a fan favorite, as the ballad taps into the sentimental side of Matchbox Twenty. From the arrangement on acoustic guitar to lyrics like, “That smile on your face like summer/The way that your hand keeps touching mine/Let me be the one to make it right,” this track will be the one to pull on the listening audience’s heartstrings.

I think what music fans will appreciate about North is that it is a record that you can listen to from beginning to end. It plays like every song is there for a reason. Also, the change in mood and tempo will keep you on your toes and tuned in throughout the 12 tracks.

Matchbox Twenty’s latest record, North, is available now. The band will be making an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman on September 5.
